Earth's thin atmosphere is all that stands between life on Earth and the cold, dark void of space. This image, taken by astronauts aboard in the International Space Station in 2008, shows light from our Sun as it passes through these layers of gases that are held to the planet by Earth's gravity. Our planet's atmosphere has no clearly defined upper boundary, but instead gradually thins out into space. Most of the visible light from the Sun, as well as ultraviolet and infrared light, passes through the Earth's atmosphere. The atmosphere protects from more harmful types of light—such as X-rays and gamma rays—given off by cosmic sources.

La delgada atmósfera de la tierra es lo único que separa la vida sobre la Tierra del oscuro y frío vacío del espacio. Esta imagen fue tomada por los astronautas a bordo de la Estación Espacial en el 2008 y muestra la luz del Sol que pasa a través de capas de gases que son mantenidos por la gravedad de la Tierra. La atmósfera de nuestro planeta no tiene un frontera superior definida, sino que gradualmente se va poniendo más delgada hasta desvanecer en el espacio. La mayor parte de la llamada luz visible del Sol así como la luz ultravioleta y el infrarrojo pasan a través de la atmósfera de la Tierra. La atmósfera nos protege de los tipos de luz más dañinos - tales como los rayos X y los rayos gamma- que son emitidos por fuentes cósmicas.

Die blaue Gasschicht der Erde
Die dünne Atmosphäre bildet die Trennwand zwischen dem Leben auf der Erde und dem des Universums. Das von Astronauten in der internationalen Raumstation aufgenommene Bild zeigt, wie Licht durch diese Gasschichten scheint. Diese Gase werden von der Gravitationskraft angezogen. Die Atmosphäre hat keine klare Grenze, sondern dünnt sich aus. Der Grossteil des Sonnenlichts, so wie Ultraviolett- und Infrarotstrahlen, durchdringen die Erdatmosphäre. Diese Schicht schützt uns vor den schädlichen Lichtwellen wie beispielsweise Röntgen- und Gammastrahlen. Diese haben ihren Ursprung in kosmischen Quellen.
